I'm a Senior Lecturer in the Dept. of English Language Education at the Education University of Hong Kong and Director of eTEACHERS.online, Director of the Community of Practice (CoP) eTEACHERS and Host of the online professional development and teacher training website: eTEACHERS.online (http://www.eteachers.online). I am also the Author of the self-published work of allegorical autofiction, Hospital Windows. The story was inspired by my teaching of a life writing course and my life experience as a member of the Baha'i Faith.
I recently served as the Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the English Subject to the English Unit of the Hong Kong Education Bureau and Examinations Authority (three years); Associate Head of the Department of English Language Education (seven years); and Field Experience Coordinator for English major programs (seventeen years).
My career aspiration has been to help teachers and students find useful and meaningful learning moments in a variety of informal and formal contexts. I teach students in undergraduate and post-graduate pre-service English teaching programs, and conduct courses and professional development workshops for in-service teachers.
At the Department of ELE at EdUHK, I'm engaged in several projects assisting colleagues and in-service local teachers enhance their teaching effectiveness using technology. The aim of these projects is to assist students to experience learning that is more creative, efficient and fun.
One of the fun projects that I recently led is "Learning English with Little Leaf" (http://www.littleleaf.hk), an animated series - with associated e-books, online activities and teaching materials - to help primary students learn English.
One of the most engaging and meaningful classes of my teaching career is "Writing Your Life." My students engage in deep reflection and writing about their most profound and important life experiences. Other courses I have taught include ELT Methodology; Effective Use of e-Resources in ELT; Teaching Grammar-in-Context; and Introduction to Linguistics.
I served as the English subject Field Experience Coordinator for EdUHK for fifteen years, working with student-teachers and local host schools on the teaching practicum for qualified teacher status. This position gave me the opportunity to keep in touch what's going on in the frontlines of many local schools as they coped with a constantly changing education landscape.
Projects
eTEACHERS.online is a global community of excellent English teachers sharing experience and learning from each other. We're always on the lookout for best practices in the constantly changing landscape of English teaching, and we bring it to you here. We host a hybrid Roundtable event at the Education University of Hong Kong each year to bring teachers together face-to-face (if you're in Hong Kong) or online (if you're anywhere else in the world). From these Roundtables and other projects with great teachers, we have collected ideas and experiences to inspire English teachers of all generations. Explore the site to find the latest sharing, discover great eTeachers, and try out the training course on our favorite teaching apps. Join the mailing list to be invited to the annual Roundtable and to get news of other events and updates.
The “Learning English with Little Leaf” (https://www.littleleaf.hk) project of the English Language Education Department of EDUHK includes six units on different topics that tell stories about Little Leaf and his family. Each unit includes two animated videos, a song, two e-books, and digital and hands-on activities to help primary students enjoy, participate and speak up while learning English.
All the videos are free and require no login. To access the e-Books and online activities, please sign in with your HKedCity account or with your school account. For teachers who would like to register their classes in order to track their participation, please contact us at littleleaf@eduhk.hk.
Courses
The Writing Your Life course explores the people, experiences and choices of our lives. We want to tell interesting and meaningful stories about our life experiences and share them with others. Doing so is enjoyable and interesting, but the process also makes our life experience and its meaning clearer. We begin to see patterns and understand how the way we think about our story is an important part of the story itself. In this course, we want to develop the skill of paying attention to what happens, making good choices and taking responsibility for our lives. We want to become good authors of not only the stories that have happened to us before, but of our own life itself as it happens day by day.
